Picture this. You wake up, grab your coffee, and think, Today is the day! You know what to do and today, you’re going to own it. You’re going to make the tough decisions, set boundaries, charge your worth, stop over-explaining yourself, and maybe even conquer your inbox, and overcome inaction (finally!)
Fast forward two hours: you’re scrolling through emails, questioning your career choices, eating a snack that was probably meant for lunch, and wondering why your to-do list looks like it was written by someone who doesn’t like you very much.
What happened?
It’s not that you don’t know what to do. You do. You’ve read the books, sat through the webinars, you have the skills, the resources, the certificates and even a roadmap. You know how to overcome inaction. But something is standing between you and actually doing the things that would move your business forward.
You can’t measure it, you can’t see it and it definitely doesn’t come with a spreadsheet. That something? Is mindset.
As we know, businesses love strategy. They’ll strategise their marketing, their sales, their growth plans, retention plans, their recycling strategy and even the important Friday social club. As long as there’s a strategy they’ll know what to do. But mindset? That’s often where businesses go, “let’s just do a team yoga session and call it mental wellbeing. (Meanwhile, their employees are still overwhelmed, disengaged, and quietly thinking about quitting.)
Mindset isn’t just personal development and positive thinking. It’s a business’s unconscious strategy that determines:
Mindset isn’t a nice to have, it’s the foundation of what’s driving your business in the background.
How Fear of Failure Stops Progress and Keeps You Stuck:
1. You’re Letting Your Past Failures Drive Your Business- both personal and professional.
If this is you – you’re not making decisions from strategy, you’re making them from past unresolved wounds which impact the future of your business.
2. You’re Playing Small… or Trying too hard
Some of us are hiding in our business, while others go way overboard trying to prove they are valuable, which can look like: “I’m going to work 80 hours a week and say yes to everything so no one questions my worth!” ( Ladies, that happens in family life as well).
Both are exhausting. Neither are necessary. The goal is not to “prove” your value, the goal is to own it.
3. You’re Reacting Instead of Leading
You didn’t start your business just to put out fires all day.
And yet, here you are. Every day something new pops up. Emails. Client issues. Tech problems. Sick children. Suddenly, you’re spending more time reacting than actually moving forward.
We need to get you back on track to what’s important and inspiring, because motivation pushes you but it’s an outside influence and runs out fast. Plus it can get expensive if you constantly have to motivate yourself or your employees.
Inspiration comes from within and pulls you forward, and that’s where real momentum comes from. Plus, and this is important…inspiration in any organisation influences from the top down.
So if you are the one in charge and you are not inspired…you will infect the rest of your organisation with the same lack – lustre feeling. It will be mirrored back to you. So the first step is always to get the leader re-inspired.
Mental agility is the next true growth skill
Let’s talk about blame and how to overcome inaction.
If you’ve ever been part of a business (or, let’s face it, a family), you know that when things go wrong, everyone loves to point fingers.
Blame is easy, but it doesn’t solve anything. It keeps you stuck. Sometimes for days, weeks, months, years and yes, even decades.
Great businesses and leaders don’t blame, they take ownership. And when everyone on your team, including you, operates from ownership instead of excuses, (which is usually fear of change in disguise,) things start moving forward instead of just going in circles.
Mindset translates to the type of business owner you are according to this Forbes article
At the end of the day, businesses that only focus on profit miss the point. Business is about people. Your team, your clients and YOU.
When your business ignores mindset here’s what happens:
But when your business prioritises mindset:
Start treating mindset like an actual business strategy instead of a “get fixed quick strategy or hack” out of the latest book.
Here’s your challenge:
